1) In what ways were slaves defined as property?
Slaves were defined as property, in the following ways:
--They brought and sold
--They were appraised as how they worked and what they could do for their owners

2) How did slavery provide a foundation for both White & Black America today?
--I believe that we are where we are today because of slavery. Unfortunately slavery is our American history. Because of this African Americans were seen as secondary citizens. And even today they are treated less than "Whites".

3) If civil disobedience is nonviolent, why is so much violence associated with it?
--Civil disobedience - tactic promoted by Martin Luther King, Jr., belief that people have the right to disobey, unjust laws under certain circumstances.
--Because African Americans wanted the same rights that whites already enjoyed. And because of this, the whites felt threatened. Some are not good with change.


4) How did observers of the urban riots tend to dismiss any social importance to the outbreaks?
--I believe that they didn't think that with small group of rioters, that they would gain any changes. I believe that most knew of the civil rights the South and legistratifve victories in Washington, but they really didn't think that change would really come about.

5) Why has religion proved to be a force for both unity and disunity amoung African Americans?
--As stated in the book, slave owners would often would make their slaves "become civilize" by attending church. But it often back fired on the them. The Black church leaders would preach from the pulpits to seek out rights on behalf of all Blacks. Because of this it unitied them as a group of one. If different religions available, they went to different churches, causing disunity amount African Americans.
